Graf Harrach / Riedel Glassworks

History

Harrachov glassworks founded in 1712 at Novy Svet (Neuwelt). Taken over by Johan Pohl (1796-1850). In 1887 taken over by Josef Riedel combined with his own glassworks. Riedel was sited in the Jizerske Hory mountains.

1760- milk white glass painted with bright colours, coats of arms, amatory scenes, biblical scenes, allegories of divine virtues, seasons months, years, sundry parts of the world, floral compositions & neoclassical images. Glasses with amatory scenes & rock gardens.

late 18th century-trapped silver & gold sheets engraved with scenes.- Early 1820xs-Outstanding cutting & engraving by D. Biemann.

1840's-Uranium glass cut & ornamented. Riedal & Harrach produced opal glass

1880's-cased glass

1884-1900-Bohdan Kadlec, Bohemian, venetian, iridescent glass

1898 Tiffany style glass

1900- enamelled vases with designs from Alfons Maria Mucha. Also cameo, engraved & cut glass.

1900's- Josef Riedel Glassworks: Table glass, beads for jewelrey, yellow & violet opalised glass painted with black & gold geometric patterns.

1902-Harrach: Art nouveau style cutting, engraving, inclusions by Julius Jelinek. Colourles glass with engraving by Carl Lederle.

1903-Jan Kotera (1871-1923) famous geometric design punch set.- Artel Group designed for the factories,

Mark

Can appear as full signature or marked panels with initials. Fakes do appear occasionally. Look for slight uneveness on wheel cutting (lower signature), or v. sharp diamond point on upper signature (rarer).

Panels or plaques engraved by Fritsche sometimes appear with initials but ONLY when there is not enough room for full script.
